Art Appraisers
The art appraiser makes her or his appraisal based on ‘readily apparent identity’, and is not a participant in the due diligence process surrounding attribution and authenticity. However, in cases where the ‘readily apparent identity’ of a work is in substantial doubt, SAFA can offer confirmation that the artists’ materials and techniques are consistent with the purported identity of the work. We assist appraisers with questions regarding readily apparent identity, with identifying the extent and severity of damage for damage and loss appraisals, and for helping with the identification of appropriate conservators and conservation treatments based on the nature of the damage involved. Dr. Mass is on the Advisory Council of the Appraisers Association of America, lectures frequently at their annual meeting, and was a speaker at the 2016 Foundation for Appraisal Education Seminar.
